Aarti Gupta is Associate Professor with the Environmental Policy Group at the Department of Social Sciences in Wageningen University, the Netherlands.
Prior to coming to Wageningen, she completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship with Columbia University’s Center for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO), based in Washington DC; and a Global Environmental Assessment Fellowship for two years at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Her research focuses on global environmental governance, including anticipatory governance of novel technologies and the (contested) role of science and knowledge therein, as well as questions of transparency and accountability, with an empirical focus on climate, forests, and biosafety. Publications include guest edited special issues in Ecological Economics and Global Environmental Politics, and the co-edited volume Transparency in Global Environmental Governance: Critical Perspectives (MIT Press 2014).
She has also supplemented this academic journey with working outside of academia, including with international and non-governmental organisations, such as the United Nations Development Programme in New York, Oxfam-Novib in the Hague, and Transparency International in Berlin.
At Wageningen, Aarti coordinates the “Governing Climate Futures” research theme within the Environmental Policy Group. She is also the co-founder of the REDD@WUR network, an interdisciplinary network of over 80 researchers working on the interface between climate and forest governance.
Internationally, she is Lead Faculty in the Earth System Governance research alliance, the largest social science research network on sustainability, and currently one of six Coordinating Lead Authors developing the ESG New Directions Science and Implementation Plan for the next phase of activities (2018-2028). She is also an Associate Editor of the journal Global Environmental Politics, and a member of a 15-member Academic Working Group on International Governance of Climate Engineering.
Aarti holds a PhD in Environmental Studies from Yale University. Her disciplinary background is in political science and international relations, as well as science and technology studies.
