Public funding could scale up Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies, this new report by Perspectives Climate Research of the NET-RAPIDO project finds. While CDR does not replace the need to drastically cut back greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), an ensemble of CDR approaches could contribute to limiting global warming. Governments also need to implement strict monitoring mechanisms for CDR to have an impact.
The report finds both governments and private actors can and should support and scale up CDR technologies through coordinated action. Importantly, the authors stress dedicated public funding is a precondition for delivering CDR as part of countries’ mitigation efforts.
