Indonesia’s Just Transition (JT) agenda aims to integrate climate objectives with social inclusion and economic development within national climate and development frameworks.
This policy brief highlights the country’s progress, challenges, and opportunities in its Just Transition ideation and implementation.
Key challenges for Indonesia’s JT:
- the narrow framing of Just Transition within the energy sector and JETP,
- limited integration of Just Transition framework across other sectors,
- inadequate financing for social components,
- persistent data gaps that hinder evidence-based planning and monitoring
International actors can support implementation by strengthening governance capacity, expanding Just Transition frameworks beyond JETP and the energy sector, building subnational planning capacity, addressing data gaps, and increasing grant-based financing for social components that are essential for an equitable transition but offer limited private returns.
