This policy brief examines plans to diversify the economy of Russia’s main coal region, Kuzbass. Despite negatively affecting the local environment and inhabitants’ health, the coal sector remains an important economic factor in Kuzbass. While the Russian government recognises the need to diversify the region’s economy as the world gradually shifts away from coal, all promoted options involve fossil fuels. Despite the region’s renewable energy potential, there are no signs of exploiting this potential in the next decades.
The brief was authored by George Safonov from the Higher School of Economics, Russia. It is part of a research project analysing the current and future status of coal in Russia.
