Over the past decade, Chile built one of the most ambitious Just Transition frameworks in Latin America. This policy brief, authored by Luciano Travella Barrios and Cristian Ceruti Mahn, highlights Chile’s significant progress in advancing a Just Socioecological Transition (JSET) and identifies areas for improvement (institutional, financial, and legal) to ensure long-term success.
What began as an energy-focused response to coal phase-out has evolved into a Just Socioecological Transition which links climate action to ecosystem restoration, water governance, labour, gender equality, and human rights. Our policy brief takes stock of this journey and underlines ambition is not the main challenge, for Chile implementation is.
The publication points to a critical opportunity: international cooperation can play a decisive role in supporting diagnostics and indicators, building institutional capacity, and aligning climate finance with just transition goals in Chile.
