What are the opportunities and challenges of using new technologies to advance the just oil and gas transition in the North Sea? A new Oil and Gas Transitions report by Aalborg University published today looks at two case studies in Denmark.
The report North Sea Oil and Gas: Potential Technological Transformation Towards Net-Zero Emissions explores the role of
- Carbon capture and storage in offshore oil and gas fields and
- The transformation of offshore oil and gas platforms into (renewable) energy island.
Weighing the feasibility of these technologies, the authors argue that repurposing offshore oil and gas platforms and infrastructure can be considered part of the just transition to a low-carbon North Sea economy. However, more analysis is needed to fully understand the technological transition of the sector and its implications for workers, communities and wider society.
