Despite predictions that oil and gas demand may peak as early as 2030, 80% of the world’s energy still comes from oil, gas and coal. At the same time, current events have exposed the economic and geopolitical risks brought by our dependence on fossil fuels.

A just transition to clean, stabile, resilient energy is needed not only to meet our climate goals and drive growth in new industries, jobs, and investment, but to reduce exposure to volatile energy markets and high-risk trading partners. The energy system needs to transform from a source of vulnerability into a foundation for economic resilience and security.

2026 is set to be a crucial year for the global energy transition. The ‘First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels’ (TAFF) which took place in Colombia in April, as well as the COP30 Presidency’s delivery of a TAFF Roadmap for COP31, demonstrate a growing political momentum for cooperation on clean energy transitions. Now, we must ensure that this momentum does not falter.

Against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical risks, even ambitious countries are facing pressures to reverse their commitments to transition away from fossil fuels. Governments can strengthen the political resilience of their commitments by embedding just energy transitions within a cross-cutting agenda. An integrated approach to climate, security, industrial, and trade policy can pool resources, balance co-benefits and trade-offs across national priorities, and ensure transition strategies that are credible, effective, and durable.

Taking place after the Santa Marta conference and before the delivery of the TAFF Roadmap, this event will help shape an agenda for global action. Join us to co-design recommendations on how aligning policies through a cross-cutting agenda can strengthen the transition from fossil fuels, enhance energy security, and deliver a just transition.
