Just Transitions: From Principles to Practice
Climate Strategies co-organised two events focused on Just Transitions, helping to bring equity to the centre of climate discourse:
1. Official UNFCCC Side Event: “Can Just Transitions Help Rebuild Trust in Multilateral Cooperation?”
Co-hosted with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and Transparency International, this session explored whether and how Just Transitions can act as a bridge to restore trust in international collaboration and what role the UNFCCC must play in adapting to this evolving landscape. By providing a platform for neutral knowledge-based discussions, the conversation highlighted how equitable climate solutions are key to reinvigorating global solidarity and cooperation under the UNFCCC framework.
2. Workshop: “Aligning Just Transition in the UNFCCC Process with Real-World Action”
Organised with LACLIMA, this interactive, invite-only workshop brought together negotiators, technical experts, and civil society. Discussions focused on developing a comprehensive Just Transition Taxonomy and practical mechanisms under the UNFCCC’s Just Transition Work Programme. This event continued the momentum from the first session in Panama and laid critical groundwork ahead of COP30.
The Pulling Power of Paris: Amplifying Climate Ambition
On June 18, our Pulling Power of Paris Project hosted an invite-only dinner that brought together UNFCCC negotiators, policy experts, and leading researchers to discuss what ‘ambition’ can mean in the current geopolitical landscape. Participants shared insights and research on the Global Stocktake (GST), discussed its contribution to the development of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), and identified next steps to support climate ambition.
ELEVATE: Aligning Climate Ambition with Justice
On June 20, the 5th ELEVATE International Stakeholder Workshop drew on the latest ELEVATE and COMMITTED project findings to evaluate the interplay of ambition and justice-focused approaches in shaping robust 2035 NDCs. The event also explored how to capture and reflect different fairness considerations in mitigation pathways, turning these insights into practical policy solutions to advance the net-zero transition.
NEWPATHWAYS: Co-Shaping the Net-Zero Transition
Later that day, the NEWPATHWAYS project held its inaugural Global Stakeholder Workshop, bringing together experts to explore how global climate transition pathways (grounded in robust modelling and scientific analysis) can more effectively support national and regional implementation.
NEWPATHWAYS is an ambitious Horizon Europe-funded research initiative aimed at accelerating and strengthening global climate action by breaking persistent deadlocks that hinder progress toward the Paris Agreement goals. Through collaboration with Integrated Assessment Modelling teams in 17 countries, the project is developing next-generation global and national low-emission transformation pathways. These are informed by cutting-edge social science, economic analysis, and policy insights, with a strong emphasis on equity, fairness, and the alignment of international financial flows with climate objectives.
The workshop also marked the official launch of the NEWPATHWAYS website, a central hub for sharing project insights and resources.
